Right Now Chapter 1
Right now it’s 1:37 am central on Aug. 28 2008. I am sitting outside a Mobil station somewhere in Wisconsin, I think three trucks just went by. I can’t stop shaking from the cold. I’ve been driving for the past three days and slept a combined 8 or 9 hours and stopped in two different cities and haven’t spoken to a human being face to face for more than a minute the whole time. I haven’t eaten more than a salad in this entire time. I have eaten an entire box of nutri-grain bars and smoked at least 3 & ½ packs of cigarettes. I haven’t had grass or alcohol in this time, but a whole lot each would really help right now…
This small time feels like months, after all of the highways, byways, gas stations, rest areas and cars, but I cannot stop thinking about the last week before I left.
I’ll try and recap after I light another cigarette.
So there I was, smoking a cigarette and laying across the edge of Geppi’s balcony with Nate when he mentioned a music festival in Cambridge NY called Millfest that was going to happen the next day. It was no less than 24 hours later that my parents lectured me about how “strange” people would be there doing drugs and drinking alcohol as I loaded my car with a tent and two sleeping bags.
About two hours later, george & I split half a blunt in my car with the windows rolled up to secretly give Jake in the back seat a second hand high.
Shortly upon arrival, we realized we were “home”.
We were greeted generously to a mustachioed rapping cowboy playing guitar.
George and I set up our tent while Jake cleared a spot in the woods across from where Jocelynn showed us where her tent was. It was quite possibly the most dilapittated tent of all time… but we didn’t have plans for sleeping.
George & Jake took my car to look for a solid two or three hours to look for service to call Gep who was late. However, he arrived before them with Kristin, her boyfriend Jeff and the last person I’d expect to make my heart melt; a tiny, beautiful 23 year old girl who’d just out of a 6 year relationship/marriage named Maria.
An hour after their arrival, we scraped together our cash and bought acid for $10 a hit from a drug expert who would continue to snort MDMA in Jeff’s tent while smoking a bowl with us. George & Jake got back another hour later and George bought his hit.
My cigarette just went out… but I think it’s been out for a while. I should get back on the road…
